Spice
Frank Herbert's novel Dune is a sci-fi masterpiece. The main topic in Dune is a substance called Spice. All of the major political parties in Dune fight for control of the Spice and "he who controls the spice, controls the universe". This idea is a pretty obvious metaphor for the fight over the control of oil in our world.
